How did Prince get his name?

Prince was born Prince Rogers Nelson. Prince was given his father's stage name, Prince Rogers, which his father used while performing with a jazz group called the Prince Rogers Trio. Prince's father told A Current Affair that he named his son Prince because he wanted Prince "to do everything I wanted to do".

In 1993, while in a contractual dispute with Warner Bros., he changed his stage name to an unpronounceable symbol also known as the "Love Symbol", which is best rendered as either O{+> or O(+> . He had used this in order to escape the terms of his contract as the Warner-owned product, 'Prince'. Even though he requested to be referred to as simply The Artist -- and since his initial intention with the name change was to not be referred to as Prince -- everyone began calling him the Artist Formerly Known as Prince.

In May 2000, Prince ended his contract with Warner Bros. and dropped the symbol O(+>. He began referring to himself as "Prince" again.
